Lots of players and games in 2009 but lesser sales

We all know that the recent recession left a lot of people to tighten their belts and save money as much as possible and it would seem that the gaming industry was not spared from the economic turmoil of 2009. Even though there were are a lot of games that were released this year, as well as an increased in the amount of players, the sales of both software and hardware were not all the good compared to 2008. If you were wondering how it is possible that there is an increased number of players but decreased sales, players are not buying the core games which are the expensive ones.

Last year the total US sales clocked in at $21.3 billion with a total of 14.2 million console sales but there were only 12.2 million console sales. Probably one of the reasons why there is an increased player amount this year is because of the free games on facebook. Farmville alone got an approximate number of 65 million players all over the world. Even with the drop in the sales of the gaming industry this year, the community is still optimistic that it will improve in the coming year.
